Issues with Pumped Storage Plants: causes and consequences

In recent months, Poland has faced significant challenges in energy storage. Pumped storage plants, crucial for stabilizing the energy system, have dramatically reduced their output during the summer, impacting the entire energy sector.

In July 2024, the energy production from pumped storage plants, including ESP Żarnowiec, Porąbka-Żar, Dychów, and Solina, fell from 1.0-1.2% to just 0.6% of the total energy system. The primary reasons for this decline are the modernization of the Porąbka-Żar plant and hydrological drought affecting the Solina and Dychów plants.. The lack of sufficient water significantly limits their energy storage capabilities, which is particularly problematic when excess energy from photovoltaics needs to be effectively stored.

In response to these challenges, PGE is planning the construction of a new pumped storage plant in Młoty with a capacity of 1050 MW, which aims to increase energy storage capacity by 75%. However, building such facilities is a lengthy and costly process.

Meanwhile, the significance of alternative storage technologies is growing. Companies like Tesla and Chinese firm CATL are introducing new solutions with greater capacity and longer battery life, which may help stabilize the energy system in the future.
